IEEE 802.11n High-Throughput Protection Mechanisms

IEEE 802.11n devices operate in either the 2.4 GHz or the 5 GHz band. Backward compatibility for IEEE 802.11a/b/g devices needs to be taken into consideration. The IEEE 802.11n amendment identifies several different modes for high-throughput (HT) protection mechanisms. These mechanisms, known as HT protection modes, are a set of rules that devices and access points will use for backward compatibility:

Mode 0–No protection mode

Mode 1–HT nonmember protection mode

Mode 2–HT 20 MHz protection mode

Mode 3–Non-HT mixed mode
